Personalised vocabulary development for learning and understanding textbook texts with game-based computer supported programme in grades 2-4: control group impact study

Abstract

Reading is a complex process, which not only involves understanding the meaning of words and text, but also requires the simultaneous application of several other processes. In elementary school, reading activities get increased attention and are integrated into Hungarian language and literature lessons. More emphasis is given to word explanations and text interpretation. In later grades, there are more course materials and thus more texts to interpret, so the differences in learning performance between students are increasingly apparent. One very effective tool for developing reading comprehension is vocabulary development, specifically, the development of reading and comprehension of the words that students need in school. The aim of our research was to develop a comprehensive online vocabulary development program based on the most common corpus of more than 10,000 words found in textbooks used during the eight grades of primary school, which can be used to develop students in a personalised way, in or out of school, using game-based learning tools. In a control group study, we monitored the impacts of the development program on pupils in grades 2 to 4 using content-independent and content-embedded task types. The reliability indicators of the measurement tests were found to be adequate in all grades and for all task types. Overall, both the students in the development group and the control group showed significant improvement by the end of the intervention period, indicating the sensitivity of the selected age group to be developed. In the post-test, there was no significant difference between the results of 3rd and 4th graders in content-independent tasks. In the control group, the content-embedded task type in grade 2 also proved to be more difficult in the post-test, in contrast to the results of the development group, which performed significantly better in this task type at the end of the developmental period. The significance of the research is that the vocabulary development program offers a playful, computer-based learning environment, which can significantly contribute to the improvement of reading comprehension and learning efficiency.
